Gujarat’s Role as Ceramic Centre to be Bolstered by Massive Investment

In what is a landmark statement by The Government of Gujarat in India, it has been proposed that the central government include 11 more towns of the state in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM).

The names of three towns – Jamnagar, Gandhidham and Morbi – have been proposed in considering over US$6 billion worth of investment. Also, the names of Ankleshwar, Bharuch, Navsari, Bardoli, Valsad, Anand, Mehsana and Palanpur have been proposed as they fall on the proposed Delhi-Mumbai dedicated freight Industrial Corridor.

Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Porbandar are already under JnNURM. Gujarat’s proposal to include Anand and Gandhinagar in JnNURM is pending, it is reported.

“This huge level of investment in industry and logistics infrastructure will enable ceramic manufacturers from all over the State of Gujarat to press their case even more convincingly on an international stage,” said Kevin Hudson, Event Director of Indian Ceramics 2010. “Freight has always been a problem, but such a high degree of investment will encourage factories in the region to upgrade facilities still further, now that they know the promise of greater international riches are possible.”
