SGL Group Announces Graphite Electrode Price Increases

SGL Group (Wiesbaden, Germany) has just announced the following price increases for its graphite electrodes effective 1 October 2009 for all new business:

Europe:

Americas, Asia (excluding China), Near Middle East and Africa:

Regular-sized is defined as: diameter 14" (350mm) – 24" (600mm)
Extra-sized is defined as: diameter 26" (650mm) – 30" (750mm)

The new prices will be applicable effective 1 October and until further notice for all new orders and shipments through to 30 June 2010. These new prices have been calculated on the basis of no further cost burdens.

SGL said that the price improvement effectively realised so far in 2009 was not sufficient to compensate for cost increases deriving from raw materials, particularly after old inventories had been absorbed. The prices just announced constitute an increase compared to current contracted levels prevailing in the second half 2009. SGL added that the new prices had to be seen in the context of rising demand for graphite electrodes after the drastic production cutbacks in the first half 2009 and were necessary to maintain the efficiency of the plants of SGL Group.
