Meissen Starts Plans for Tercentenary Celebrations

In one year, this week will mark the 300th anniversary of the establishment of the world famous Meissen porcelain factory in eastern Germany. Amongst the many events scheduled to mark this milestone, the following have already been announced:

8 May – 31 October 2010 at Albrechtsburg Meissen, in cooperation with Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen:

A Special Exhibition of the Innovations of the History of the Manufactory – From its beginnings, technological innovations at the Meissen porcelain manufactory have been the precondition for a successful realisation of artistic designs. But the reverse is equally true: the desire for special forms of artistic expression in Meissen Porcelain has always fuelled the solution of technical problems. This fruitful interaction started with the invention of the first European hard porcelain and it has continued throughout the centuries to this day. The exhibition will show prominent strands of development, tracing them through the centuries.

8 May – 31 October 2010 at Albrechtsburg Meissen in cooperation with Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen:

Der Stein der Weis(s)en 300 Years of the Legendary Manufactory Meissen – Albrechtsburg as a Porcelain Castle.

On 6 June 1710, the first European porcelain manufactory was established at Albrechtsburg Meissen. This is where the worldwide success of Meissen Porcelain started. In the gothic walls, the first manufacturers around Böttger found the protection for their secret and space for the production of the first European hard porcelain. Today, we see no traces of the struggles, the work conditions, and the artistic and technical achievements of the first 153 years of the Meissen Manufactory.

On the journey to the origins of Meissen porcelain, unique testimonials tell us about the development and perfection of the white shard in the ‘invisible manufactory’. The economic and technological conditions and the representation of the manufactory business in the castle are shown just as much as technological innovations and developments from 300 years of Meissen Porcelain history.

May – August 2010 at the Japanisches Palais in Dresden, in cooperation with the Porzellansammlung of Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden:

A Special Exhibition ‘Triumph der Blauen Schwerter’ [Triumph of the Blue Swords] - The exhibition focuses on the first 100 years of the manufactory. The special exhibition will show large parts of the rich holdings of Porzellansammlung that are usually in storage and not publicly displayed. The show will be rounded off by loans from museums and collections around the globe, thus providing a comprehensive overview of Meissen’s art of porcelain between the Baroque and Biedermeier. Paintings and drawings will place the works in their cultural and art historical context.
