UK’s ‘Most Sustainable Bricks’ Roll Off Measham Line

The first batch of bricks have rolled off the production line at Hanson UK’s new £50 million brick factory at Measham in Leicestershire.

The largest soft-mud brick plant in Europe, it has been developed to combine locally sourced recycled raw materials with low energy, low waste processes to make bricks with the lowest embodied CO2 available. With the capacity to produce 30,000 bricks an hour, the fully mechanised factory can operate with just 28 staff.

Hanson Building Products’ Managing Director David Szymanski was on hand to supervise the first batch of Atherstone Red being loaded for delivery to customers. He was joined on his tour of the factory by John Carter, Chief Operating Officer at Travis Perkins plc.

John Carter said: “I was very impressed to see Hanson’s streamlined low carbon manufacturing process making bricks of such consistent high quality. I have always appreciated the country’s affection for bricks and it is great to see that this tradition can continue in the 21st century with Measham producing bricks for low carbon construction”.

David Syzmanski added: “In developing Measham, Hanson wanted to ensure that our approach to sustainability was reflected in the way we manufacture bricks. It’s very gratifying to see sustainable, aesthetically pleasing bricks that meet the demands of sustainable modern construction now coming off the production line and into our customers’ warehouses".
