Plasma Deposition of an Anti-microbial Coating onto Polyester
The Challenge
A fabric treatment manufacturer approached Ceram to determine the efficiency of plasma deposition of an anti-microbial coating onto polyster.
What Ceram Delivered
ToFSIMS (Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) was used to ‘fingerprint’ the surface of the untreated fabric and the treated fabric.
Selected significant signals associated directly with the coating and the fabric were then chemically mapped to illustrate the efficiency of the coating (see below). Key signals were then overlaid using colour maps to demonstrate the coating layer distribution.

Value to the Client
From the analytical work that Ceram’s experts carried out, the client was able to modify their plasma deposition process to improve coating over the fabric surface.
