RoHS - Restriction of Hazardous Substances for Electronic and Electrical Equipment

The new RoHS regulations come into effect on 1st of July 2006, and apply to all parts of new electrical and electronic equipment. In the regulation levels of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), Chrome VI, and polybrominated flame retardants (PBBs & PBDEs) are restricted. This means that every component of an electrical or electronic appliance has to be tested, including non-electrical parts, for example cable ties and plastic cases.

Levels of restricted substances must be under the following limits:

Cd   = 0.01%
Pb   = 0.1%
Cr VI   = 0.1%
Hg   = 0.1%
Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs)   = 0.1%
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)   = 0.1%

At CERAM Testing Services we are able to analyse for all restricted substances to the required limits. Initially this is done by semi-quantitative X-Ray Florescence (XRF), which gives a scan for all the restricted substances. If however one or more of the analyses are close to the limits other methods are used to fully quantify, and ensure the correct result.
