'Arab Cement & Building Materials' reports that the Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates ceramic manufacturing company, RAK Ceramics, began pilot production of its new plant in China in mid-July, with actual production beginning during August.

The US$20 million plant will have a capacity of 15,000 square metres per day of different kinds and dimensions of ceramic tiles. The potential maximum capacity of the plant is reported to be 45,000 square metres per day.

The company has also started construction of its new US$15 million plant in the Sudan, with a capacity of 10,000 square metres per day of ceramic tile. Production in Sudan is scheduled to start in early 2004.

The company said that the opening of its new plant in Guangdong Province, 300km from Hong Kong, lies within its expansion policy aimed at establishing more production arms in several international markets.

The factory has been equipped with the most state-of-the-art machines and technologies in the sector. RAK added that the plant in Sudan is considered the most developed plant of its kind in Africa and this development too comes within the company's policy for expansion in all continents, especially in the Arabic countries, with a view to contributing to developing their industrial sectors.
