Minerals Containing Radioactivity

NRPB, the National Radiological Protection Board (Didcot, Oxon, England), has updated its previous broadsheet 'Working with Zircon Sands' in the 'Radiation at Work' series, to now take account of a wider range of minerals containing natural radioactivity. The broadsheet has been published to illustrate the use of minerals containing natural radioactivity in the workplace.

The revised edition contains an introduction to radioactivity, types of radiation and Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORMs). Typical concentrations of radioactivity in some geological materials are given along with information on the potential external and internal radiation hazards as a consequence of working with such materials.

Precautions and procedures to minimise radiation dose are described and typical occupational doses are compared with the UK average annual public dose, most of which comes from natural radiation.

Information is also given in respect of the potential application of any relevant legislation and the conditions for exemption from controls.

'Minerals Containing Natural Radioactivity' is intended for industrial companies which handle large quantities of natural minerals where employees might be exposed to dusty processes or where employees may be required to work in bulk storage areas. The broadsheet opens out to form a poster for display in the workplace.
