Proskills Gains from BPTC Strengths

Gwyn Baker, previously Director of the Building Products Training Council (BPTC), is bringing his knowledge and experience to the Proskills team. Gwyn, together with all eight staff from the BPTC, transferred to Proskills in August. Proskills is the new Sector Skills Council (SSC) which is working with employers and Government to develop skills in the process and manufacturing industries.

Gwyn, who has been involved in developing industry strategy and providing skills services, facilitation and infrastructure to the Building Products industry since 1990, explained: "At BPTC our maxim was 'converting strategy into action'. That commitment has moved with us into Proskills. However, as part of a larger organisation we will have more clout, particularly with regard to Government, both in terms of setting strategy and obtaining funding for raising skill levels".

One benefit is the opportunity to develop a Modern Apprenticeship customised to the needs of the Building Products industry. As a stand-alone industry this had not been feasible, but it is believed that Proskills will be able to develop a Modern Apprenticeship which can be customised for each participating sector, providing employers and employees with really relevant training.

Gwyn has substantial personal experience of successfully bringing complementary industry sectors together to create stronger and more effective partnerships. During these transformations the organisation that developed into BPTC changed its name several times but never lost sight of its primary purpose, to remain close to the people in the industry and to serve their needs. In this respect the move to Proskills is already a well trodden road both for the members and the staff of the BPTC.
