Ibstock Experience Part of Total Productive Manufacture Presentation

A recent joint sector meeting featured two presentations of interest to the industry: one from Irene Stevenson, Training Manager, Total Productive Manufacture (TPM) with the Building Products Training Council (BPTC) and one from Gareth Thomas of Skills at Work (Leicestershire Skills Council) speaking on the Employer Training Pilots (ETPs).

Irene Stevenson's presentation on TPM was based on her experience working with Ibstock Brick. She explained the philosophy of TPM and its development from other philosophies such as Total Quality Management. She also cross-referred TPM to the Japanese initiative 5S which translated into English as Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise and Sustain.

Following the meeting, Bob White and Graham Thorne of Ibstock Cattybrook shared their experiences of implementing TPM at their factory with other members by outlining the benefits which had accrued.

Gareth Thomas gave a comprehensive presentation on the ETP which had been initially started in six areas, rising to 12 areas in August 2003 and which was extended to 20 LSC areas in August 2004. Although not officially confirmed, the view of many people was that the programme would be rolled out to all 47 LSCs in March 2006.
