New Force Created in Portuguese Ceramic Raw Materials


On 12 September 2001, WBB Minerals announced the formation of a joint venture company in Portugal, with Jose Mota and Carlos Mota. The joint venture, which has been cleared by the relevant authorities, has been names WBB Mota - Sociedade de Gestora de Participacoes Sociais SA.

The new company united the kaolin reserves, mining and processing activities of Vialpo, Somical and Alvaraes Inertes, with the prepared ceramic body facilities of WBB Cerapasta, Sopal and Prepasta, under common control and management.

WBB Mota will become responsible for the marketing and distribution of all WBB Minerals' products in Portugal and will also become the distributor for kaolin produced by Sibelco Portuguesa and prepared bodies produced by Ceramica do Centro. WBB Portugal will manage the export of WBB Mota products.

The independent management team will be headed up by Paul Burton as Managing Director. Paul was formerly General Manager of the ECC (Imerys) and DAM kaolin businesses in Portugal. He is joined on the board by Jose and Carlos Mota, Tim Chambers (currently General Manager of WBB Portugal) and Robert Archer (Development Director of WBB Minerals) who will act as Chairman.

WBB Mota's head office will be located at the Sopal prepared body plant just outside Vagos, 15km south of Aveiro.
