Wedgwood Manufactures Papal Vase

Pope John Paul II is to be presented with a vase made in Stoke-on-Trent to mark the Silver Jubilee of his Pontificate on 16 October 2003. He will be handed the unique Jasper Vase 40 by the Archbishop of Birmingham during a ceremony at the Vatican. The prestigious Wedgwood vase has been specially commissioned as a celebration gift from the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Based on the historic 40 Shape - so called because the design featured as entry number 40 in Josiah Wedgwood 1st's original 18th century First Shapes Book - the exquisite pale blue and white vase features in bas-relief the Papal Coat of Arms and an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus.

A further bas-relief also features a vine to symbolise Christ, several other decorations and, on the base, an inscription to record the Papal Silver Jubilee.

A special certificate will accompany the vase to Rome and is inscribed with the names of the seven Wedgwood Barlaston craftsmen and women who took more than six weeks to create the masterpiece.

Wedgwood Company Secretary Mark Downie said: "We're delighted to be asked by the Archdiocese to make this special vase. It is wonderful that the heritage and craftsmanship of Wedgwood is being used to mark this important occasion".
