Sri Lankan's Want 'Paddy' Clay

Ceramic manufacturers in Sri Lanka are seeking changes in nationals laws which currently restrict the quarrying of paddy lands, because some of them contain premium deposits of kaolin.

The Ceramics Industry Task Force has asked the Sri Lankan government to revoke certain provisions contained in the Agrarian Development Act which ban the mining of paddy lands. The task force says that it needs the clay to secure the long-term survival of the industry.

The industry is trying to diversify into high-end products, such as automobile and electrical components as well as bioceramics.
