Open Day on Conservation and Restoration of Ceramics

An Open Day will be held at West Dean College, Chichester, West Sussex, England on 5 February 2003. This is described as an ideal opportunity for prospective students to visit the purpose-built ceramic conservation and restoration workshop and to meet current students and tutors on an informal basis. There will also be tours of the student accommodation and staff will be available to offer admission and funding advice.

West Dean College, an internationally known centre for specialist training in conservation and restoration, is offering graduate and postgraduate diplomas in the conservation and restoration of ceramics and related materials. Postgraduate diplomas are validated by the University of Sussex and the ceramics programmes have the full support of the British Antique Dealers' Association.

The small number of students - usually 12 in total - allows for a high level of personal tuition. Students learn by working on objects of historical importance from museums and private collections. In addition to achieving a high level of practical skill, students are expected to acquire a comprehensive theoretical and historical knowledge of ceramics and related subjects.

Students on these diplomas benefit from the fact that they form part of related group programmes, namely the conservation and restoration of books & library materials, antique furniture, clocks and fine metalwork.

For further information on the Open Day, e-mail Kathryn Kellagher at: diplomas@westdean.org.uk
