Life Performance of Materials

NPL will be assisting the DTI in the formulation of a new programme entitled Life Performance of Materials (LPM), and is seeking your views on the driving issues for research. The programme seeks to underpin the competitiveness of UK industry through the development, application and dissemination of measurement methods for materials. It will achieve this by addressing industrial problems relating to the following areas:

  • in service performance
  • life prediction
  • modelling
  • degradation monitoring
  • failure prediction

  • An industrial consultation exercise will be carried out by NPL and technical advisors to be appointed by the DTI. This will allow you to:

  • be a driver in the development of new technology
  • ensure the research addresses industrial problems relevant to you
  • maximise your benefit from DTI funded research

  • Companies in any sector for whom life performance of materials is a driving issue are encouraged to contact NPL's Materials Enquiry Point and participate in the programme definition. Alternatively companies may participate electronically at:

    http://www.npl.co.uk/npi/cmmt/dme/index.html

All relevant areas will be included, with NPL focusing on aqueous corrosion and degradation at high temperatures. The direction of the research will be based on an in-depth understanding of the needs of industry. The industrial consultation exercise will also highlight the direct benefits of the programme to industry.

The DTI expects to fund at least £5 million of well focused generic projects that meet the derived objectives. The new programme is likely to start in April 2001, and will last three and a half years. It will follow on from the current Degradation of Materials in Aggressive Environments (DME) programme run by NPL.
