New Volume on Granular Material Technologies

The Materials Research Society (Warrendale, PA, USA) has announced the publication of Volume 759 from the MRS Symposium Proceedings Series, entitled 'Granular Material-Based Technologies'. This is the proceedings volume from the 2002 MRS Fall Meeting held in Boston, Massachusetts.

The past decade, says MRS in its introduction, has seen an explosive growth of interest in the physics of granular materials. Granular media are comprised of macroscopic objects with internal degrees of freedom. Granular assemblies exhibit phenomena that incorporate the properties of traditional solids, liquids and gases, making it a unique state.

In many ways, the granular state is seen as a generalised state of matter. This new volume brings together researchers from many countries and disciplines to assess issues and problems concerned with the collective behaviour of granular assemblies as encountered in the context of various applications.

In particular, these applications include ceramic science, shock propagation and absorption, design and maintenance of stable natural and artificial structures, processing of pharmaceuticals and self-assembly processes associated with the synthesis of ultra-high density magnetic tapes.

MRS says the volume should be of value to researchers involved in exploring granular material-based technologies and it expects the book to stimulate further research in this area. Topics include: electromagnetic fields; structural issues; flow behaviour; and dynamical problems.

The book is hardcover and contains 20 papers in 163 pages. It is available at a price of US$93 (USA), US$106 (Non-USA) or US$81 (MRS Member). ISBN is 1-55899-696-6.
