Hench and Filser Bestowed with World Academy of Ceramic 2004 Prize

Larry Hench (Imperial College, London, England) and Frank Filser (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) have been selected over several dozens of candidates as recipients of the 'International Ceramic Prize 2004' granted by the World Academy of Ceramics. Formal appointment has been recently decided by the Academy Council, chaired by P Vincenzini, Italy, on advice of the International Advisory Board (chaired by A Merzhanov of Russia) which followed recommendations by the Prize 2004 Committee (chaired by G L Messing of the USA).

The outstanding contribution to the global advancement of biomaterials, and specifically the development of a completely new class of 'bioactive' materials (bioglasses), has been identified as a major breakthrough which opened up important for materials in clinical applications. This was recognised by the prize for Basic Research granted to Larry Hench, whereas the prize for Industrial Research to Frank Filser recognises an excellent technical advancement in the practical exploitation of high strength TZP (tetragonal stabilised zirconia) ceramics, i.e. the very recent development of completely new all-ceramic teeth bridges and their successful transfer to industrial application.

The prizes - comprising a Certificate of Recognition and a money grant - will be presented during the inaugural session of the 'Forum 2004' of the World Academy of Ceramics, to be held in Faenza (RA, Italy) on 10 May 2004.
