Grinding As a Talking Point – Innovation from TYROLIT

With wheel memory, TYROLIT Schleifmittelwerke Swarovski KG (Schwaz, Austria) says it has revolutionised traditional tool identification and created a new method of "communication" between the grinding tool and the machine.

Ceramic and electroplated CBN grinding wheels are fitted with Microchip in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. Integrated into the main body of the grinding wheel, the microchip offers the chance to store data such as setting dimensions, tool and machine numbers etc in line with the inspection record for the grinding wheel. It also enables this data to be exchanged with the machine controller contactlessly by means of the corresponding read and write components.

TYROLIT explained that this means that for the first time the actual tool life quantities can be documented in full and made available for each reassignment. Above all, these precision tools can be used in series production in the automotive, transmission and turbine industries.
