Forum on Materials Science for Future Sustainable Technologies

The first forum on 'Materials Science for Future Sustainable Technologies' will be held at the Institute of Physics, University of Augsburg, Germany from 17-20 September 2002. This conference will be by invitation only and will bring together scientists, high-ranking industrial leaders and politicians for a strategic discussion on the crucial role of materials science for the development and the implementation of sustainable technologies.

Based on the current economic conditions and the problems of a partly devastating utilisation of resources, products and fuel, new approaches and strategies for the design and production of sustainable and appropriate functional materials and efficient processes will be discussed. The goal of the meeting is to exchange ideas and experiences on environmentally benign synthesis routes and utilisation of materials by efficient and economically feasible process technologies.

The forum is being organised by the Materials Research Society (MRS - USA), the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS), AMU University Augsburg and WZU University Augsburg. The conference will be chaired by Professor Bernd Stritzker of the Institute of Physics, University of Augsburg. Topical areas will include:

  • Fundamentals: evaluation of the current state of affairs.
  • Needs: both industrial and human needs.
  • Strategies: the fuel/energy enigma; functional composite materials; ceramics; catalytic materials; semiconductors; metals; glasses; carbon modifications; biomaterials and biomimetic materials; waste; and life cycle assessment.
  • Conclusions: conclusions will be developed during a panel discussion. The participants of the conference will reach a consensus on recommendations for adequate scientific, economic and political programmes in material science leading to sustainable technologies, to be presented to the individual governments.
