Cool Clay for Porcelain Makers

A super-translucent porcelain body, claimed to surpass anything Europe can offer, has been launched by leading potters supply company Potclays Ltd (Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, England). 'Southern Ice Porcelain', which joins the company's growing portfolio, is being manufactured for Potclays in Australia.

Managing Director Jonathan Noake said: "Southern Ice Porcelain uses unique Australasian china clays famed for their whiteness and workability, producing products which offer an extraordinary degree of translucency. We are excited about this product because we have now brought these unique properties into the reach of UK potters".

Potclays is said to be the UK's largest manufacturing supplier of ceramic materials and equipment servicing the studio, craft, industrial, education and hobby markets world-wide. The family-owned business, which has its roots in the 1930s, still has its own clay mine and produces its own glazes, while scouring the world for innovative new products and resources.

August also saw Potclays launch a new family of clay bodies to the 'Icon' range of stoneware: a toasted crank and a reduction throwing body. "The Icon range of clays are based on high grade refractory clays, with added molochite grogs designed to meet the needs of today's potters," said Jonathan Noake. "To achieve the toasting effects we've added colouring pigments."

Potclays says that other, exciting new products will be launched during the next 12 months as the company continues to strive forward, backed by tradition but with leading edge technology. "We are a family business; we place high importance on helping customers through the maze of products we now have available," said Jonathan. "Consultancy on technical and safety matters very often comes free, while our seminars are available to keep potters up to date with newly introduced ideas and innovations."

"We offer the same level of service whatever our customers want - from the smallest brush through to a kiln." he added.
