Chemetall Increases Capacity for Lithium Aluminium Hydride

Chemetall GmbH has commissioned a new plant for the production of lithium aluminium hydride (lithal) at the company's Langelsheim site near Goslar/Germany. The new plant required an investment of more than 16 million Euro and has a 50 percent higher capacity than the former one. The new production line is complemented by another new facility for producing lithal solution. The former production plant will be modified into a multi-purpose plant and will in the future be available as a back-up capacity.

The plant was constructed in close cooperation with Lurgi Öl-Gas-Chemie GmbH. Following a start-up phase of several months, the new capacities assumed regular operation in August.

With the start-up of the new lithal production line, Chemetall is further strengthening its position as the leading supplier of lithium specialties worldwide. With the new plant the company is able to satisfy the higher global demand and has additional spare capacities for covering possible short-term demand peaks or plant standstills. This means highly reliable supply for customers.

Lithium aluminium hydride is a very versatile reducing agent and is used especially for the synthesis of active substances in the pharmaceutical industry. Chemetall is the worldwide leading manufacturer and offers the product as a powder, in tablet form, and in solution. In the next step Chemetall will adjust the capacity for lithium aluminium hydride tablets to the increasing demand.

Chemetall GmbH, Frankfurt, is a subsidiary of Dynamit Nobel AG, Troisdorf.
