New Chairman for SGL's Supervisory Board

At a meeting on 17 September 2004, the Supervisory Board of SGL Carbon AG (Wiesbaden, Germany) elected Max Dietrich Kley as its Chairman. He replaces Prof-Dr Utz-Hellmuth Felcht who had recommended this development due to his own increased duties and responsibilities.

Herr Kley was until May 2003 CFO and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF AG and until recently was interim Chairman of the Management Board of Infineon Technologies AG. He is also President of Deutsche Aktieninstitut, Chairman of the Stock Market Expert Commission and member of the Board of Trustees of the International Accounting Standards Committee Foundation.

As a member of the so-called Cromme Commission on the German Corporate Governance Code and together with his internationally acknowledged financial expertise, Herr Kley will contribute to the corporate governance of SGL Carbon, including its future orientation vis-a-vis the capital markets following its refinancing and restructuring.

SGL also announced that Sten Daugaard had been appointed as successor to the Chief Financial Officer Dr Bruno Toniolo who will be retiring at the end of this year. Herr Daugaard has held the position of Executive Vice President Finance at SGL Carbon since January 2004 and his new appointment is effective January 2005.
