Construction Products for the European Single Market

A CEN Conference, in association with the European Commission Enterprise Directorate-General and the EFTA Secretariat - will take place at the Palais des Congres in Brussels, Belgium from 4-5 December 2001. It is entitled 'Construction Products for the Single Market: Expectations and Reality' and it will offer a forum for an open and transparent debate of the major issues surrounding the establishment of the single European market in these products.

The first harmonised standards for this sector are currently in the process of finalisation and the process is accelerating. CE marking already exists through European Technical Approvals and, by the time of the conference, there will be 100 or so 'harmonised' European Standards (ENs) ready.

An increasing number of CE marked products are expected to appear on the market. The impact of these harmonised technical specifications in their industry is still largely unquantified and industry will be assessing the benefits of CE marking compared to compliance with former national specifications.

The organisers say, therefore, that the timing of this conference is ideal in terms of comparing what was expected of the directive with the realities of CE marking, and using initial experiences to assess what may be necessary in the future to bring into being a truly open European market.
