New water jet test for pipes

CERAM Building Technology, part of CERAM Research Ltd, has recently commissioned the construction of a test rig in order to assess the ability of drainage and sewerage pipe walls to resist the forces involved in water jetting.

The rig applies high pressure - low flow water jets to the walls of the pipes to simulate the situation which can occur when clearing blockages. The rig can also assess how pipe walls respond in the much lower pressure, high-flow clearing situations common in some European countries.

Prof Geoff Edgell, of CERAM Building Technology, said "So far we have concentrated on the performance of clay pipes and the next stage of development will be to examine the performance of UK concrete pipes against similar conditions."

The test method is likely to be automated as part of the European specification for such pipes. The test rig is now fully operational and we offer performance evaluation on all material pipes on a confidential contract basis.
