Vietnamese Group Aims to Expand in Russia

Vietnam Glass and Ceramics for Construction Corporation (VIGLACERA), which annually exports sanitaryware worth around US$1 million to Russia, is reportedly seeking permission to build factories in Russia and the Ukraine.

With Russian import taxes standing at 60% to 70% on Vietnamese ceramic construction products, VIGLACERA is said to have additionally submitted a proposal to the Government to include glass and ceramic construction materials in a list of goods enjoying preferential tariffs.

This follows a similar request from the Vietnam Ceramics Association, which asked the Government to add ceramic products and granite floor tiles in the list of preferential exports to Russia and Bulgaria, giving the reason that shipping costs for ceramics and similar materials is usually high and invested capital is not quickly recovered.

For this reason, the Association has asked the Government to grant producers and exporters incentives, especially in the areas of taxing or in the form in credits. It also asked the Ministry of Trade to support promotional campaigns in foreign markets.

In the first eighth months of 2001, Vietnam exported US$5 million in ceramic sanitaryware and granite floor tiles.
