System Group R&D Department Presents New Developments

During Tecnargilla 2008, what has been described as an unprecedented sorting and packaging system for large-sized ceramic tiles was displayed by System Group (Fiorano, MO, Italy). This system uses the ‘Qualitron’ control device, integrating quality, gauge, shade and planarity processes. The new generation shunter automatically collects the pieces sorted into homogeneous classes and transfers them to a static pallet.

The formed stacks are then collected by a shuttle that conveys the material to the packaging area. During this step, the most interesting innovation of the whole system is carried out: the cardboard in the process is 'neutral' and can be customised during the set-up step, with logos and graphics obtained by digital printing. Then the machine arranges the cardboard package automatically, creating a case around the material. This new packaging process is called ‘4PHASES’.

4PHASES was created to satisfy a new need of the ceramic industry, aiming more and more at brand differentiation; via this new process, a neutral cardboard can be ordered, that is not linked any longer to a special product as far as dimensions and graphic pattern are concerned. This means that huge quantities of highly flammable, perishable and quickly obsolescent materials need no longer be kept in stock. Last but not least says System Ceramic Division, a great advantage of this process is the total use of the purchased materials, with following elimination of scrap materials. Packaging by 4PHASES achieves an energy saving of about 50%.

4PHASES comes from System R&D technicians’ expertise; the Project Leader is Andrea Toro, experienced and appreciated technician in this area. While joining System Group he brought the required know-how to achieve the above patented technology.
