RAK Ceramics Reaches South Pole

RAK Ceramics, the Ras Al Khaimah (United Arab Emirates) based leading manufacturer of ceramic, gres porcellanato wall and floor tiles and sanitaryware, has made history with the supply of its gres porcellanato tiles to the South Pole recently.

The company, which already exports its products to more than 125 countries across all the continents, made this break via its distributor for Reunion Island - Ravate Distribution - for the project of the TAFF Organisation. TAFF - Terres Australes et Antarctiques Francaises - belongs to the French Government and is responsible for the experimental French base Dumont-d'Urville located in the land of Adelie. This is just a few kilometres from the Magnetic South Pole.

RAK Ceramics supplied its premium gres porcellanato tiles for this project. RAK's General Manager, Dr Khater Massaad, explained: "The materials were first transported from Reunion to Kergulen Island by boat and then by an ice-breaker boat to the nearest point of the Antarctica shores.

"From there this was later airlifted by helicopter to the South Pole. The boxes had been painted with red colours in order to be easily located from the helicopter.

"Since our gres porcellanato tiles have advanced technical characteristics such as low water absorption, high frost resistance, high breaking strength - besides aesthetic appeal - these tiles will not face any technical problems in the Antarctican climates."
