Workshops on Wear Problems and Testing for Industry
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), in conjunction with Neale Consulting Engineers, is holding a series of regionally based workshops across the UK. The workshops, which address wear problems and testing for industry, will be held in Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield and Southampton.
The workshops will provide useful advice for engineers on solving problems based on an understanding of basic wear mechanisms. Ways in which new materials can be tested in laboratories will also be examined. This will all help successful application in real situations.
For research engineers and scientists in testing laboratories and universities, the workshops will provide practical guidance on the selection and operation of appropriate wear test methods for various materials and wear mechanisms. Areas that will be covered are:
Solution of industrial wear problems Wear tests to simulate practical conditions Selecting the appropriate wear test Examination of worn surfaces Recommended tests, operating conditions and procedures
The performance of many products and engineering components depends critically on tribological properties of surfaces such as wear and friction. Indeed, wear problems cause major losses to UK industry. This is estimated to have amounted to 650 million in 1997 according to a study that formed part of a DTI funded project. The venues and dates are:
Manchester - 18 October Birmingham - 1 November Sheffield - 8 November Southampton - 16 November
