Potters Celebrate Opening of Millennium Mural

Comedian and sometime potter Johnny Vegas unveiled the Hulme Millennium Mural on 1 October 2002, completed with sponsorship from the Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund. The £3,000 grant was used towards the purchase of a new kiln for the project.

The mural, celebrating Hulme at the start of the millennium, is 84 feet long, used over two tonnes of clay and has taken the Hulme Urban Potters two-and-a-half years to complete.

The inspiration for the design of the mural came from the artists themselves; they researched the history of Hulme and combined that with some of their own personal memories and stories from the area.

Brigitte Soltau, Project Coordinator for Hulme Urban Potters, said: "Hulme Urban Potters were absolutely delighted to receive a grant from the Community Trust Fund. This enabled us to buy a new kiln for the pottery workshop. Without this, making the Hulme Mural would not have been possible, so a huge thank-you to all the trustees for supporting our application".
