Combining Forces to Extend Limits of Materials Science

A fruitful partnership between PANalytical (formerly Philips Analytical
X-ray and now a Spectris business), Anton Paar GmbH and Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL) is already reported to be making important contributions
to our knowledge of materials science.

This partnership is in the form of PANalytical's X'Pert PRO MPD diffraction
system and an XRK900 non-ambient reaction chamber from Anton Paar, which
were installed last year in ORNL's High Temperature Materials Laboratory
(HTML).

An important centre of excellence within the Metals and Ceramics Division of
ORNL, HTML's mission is to conduct research that will assist US industry in
meeting the challenges in materials related to transportation and to assist
in the education and training of materials researchers.

It comprises six user centres available to researchers in industry,
universities and US federal laboratories. The user centres rely on
state-of-the-art instrumentation with extensive capabilities for
characterising the microstructure, microchemistry, physical and mechanical
properties of materials over a wide range of temperatures.

The laboratory's facilities can be used for either non-proprietary or
proprietary research and are free of charge for non-proprietary research
that is released into the public domain. The result of this policy is that
equipment is used by a large number of researchers for solving a variety of
materials problems.
