Further Expansion at Lafarge Roofing

Lafarge Roofing has inaugurated its eighth plant for concrete roof tiles in Malaysia. The modern, fully automated plant in Dengkil is said to set new standards in concrete roof tile production in Malaysia and to be the largest and most modern plant of its type in the country.

With an investment of 25 million Ringgit (around 6.5 million euro), Lafarge Roofing is increasing its capacity in Malaysia by more than 20%. Malaysia is a country with a prospering construction industry, while public and private building activity is at a high level in what is in general a good economic environment.

This move follows the earlier acquisition of Ceramica Laranjal Paulista, the Brazilian manufacturer of clay tiles. The Laranjal operation is located some 150km away from Sao Paulo, employs approximately 100 people and produces 12 million clay tiles per annum. Up until this acquisition, Lafarge only produced concrete tiles in Brazil, in four plants it already owned there.

Lafarge said that clay roof tile enjoyed a 60% share of the market and at 170 million square metres per annum, the pitched roof market there far exceeded (for instance) the German market, estimated at 110 million square metres per annum.

Lafarge Roofing has more than 200 production sites in 34 countries on four continents.
