Kanthal Heating Elements Used to Produce High Quality Porcelain in Austria

Kanthal Super heating elements manufactured by Kanthal AB are being used in three electric, fibre insulated kilns supplied to the leading Austrian ceramic giftware and tableware producer Gmundner Keramik. Designed and built by the Dutch furnace builder, Prins Ovenbau BV, the kilns are used to decorate porcelain with enamel at operating temperatures of 1015oC.

The total installed power in each kiln is 450kW, generated by six rows of eight Kanthal Super elements, each 1250mm long and rated at 9.375kW. The eight elements in each row are connected in series to line voltage without transformers and regulated by phase angle thyristors.

Kanthal Super elements are made from molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) and a component that forms a dense, protective layer of glass at the working temperature. Molybdenum disilicide has the useful property of not increasing its resistance with use and, therefore, combined with resistance to chemical attack, these elements offer a long working life. They can be used in air to heat furnaces up to 1850oC.
