Flexicon Makes Conveyors ATEX Compliant

The introduction of the ATEX (Atmosphres Explosifs) regulations - the EC Directive affecting manufacturers and users of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres - took effect on 1 July 2003. Since then, bulk solids handling specialists Flexicon Europe Ltd (Herne Bay, Kent, England) has seen a marked increase in requests for its equipment to comply with regulations that require not only electrical but also mechanical items to be certified for use in hazardous areas.

In response to this, the company has taken the initiative and gained approval under the ATEX Manufacturers Directive 94/9EC for its flexible screw conveyors.

Extensive in-house testing was carried out and a technical file and ignition risk assessment submitted to BASEEFA (2001) Ltd, the DTI appointed Notified Body for the ATEX Directive, which was accepted and approved on 18 August 2003.

This accreditation allows Flexicon to supply its flexible screw conveyors into hazardous areas: Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22 covering gas/vapours/mist/dust hazards and to ATEX category 2 (safe operation with one malfunction) and category 3 (safe operation in normal conditions).
