Féile Clai Emerging Ceramics Project

The Féile Clai ‘Emerging Ceramics’ exhibition - taking place at Aberystwyth Arts Centre (Ceredigion, Wales) from 13 October to 11 December 2006 - draws together work by emerging makers from either side of the Irish Sea. It is always exciting to look at the work of people who are just setting out on their career and in this show the selectors, two from Wales and two from Ireland, have tried to represent many aspects of contemporary practice from functional vessels to sculptural ceramics and installation.

Few of the makers work in a directly illustrative mode but many have chosen to make clay forms that have allusions to the natural world. They use the intrinsic qualities of clay in an expressive way avoiding the decorated surface.

As part of the Féile Clai project, Justine Allison was presented with an Award of Excellence for her ceramics shown in the ‘Emerging Ceramics’ exhibition at The Kilkenny Crafts Gallery Ireland, and The Ceramics Gallery, Aberystwyth Arts Centre. She was selected from the twelve makers from Wales and Ireland’s Interreg area by four jurors, two from Ireland and two from Wales.

Henry Pim presented her with the award made by John Maltby in Ireland and Jack Doherty is presenting her with the award in Wales. As part of this award, Justine is invited to show her work in the exhibition ‘Earthly Delights’ next year. This will be an exhibition of established makers from Wales and Ireland and will be shown at Farmleigh in Dublin and at the Ceramics Gallery, Aberystwyth next July during the International Ceramics Festival.

'Emerging Ceramics' provides a platform to promote the best of new and emerging ceramics from the INTERREG areas of Ireland and Wales. This exhibition is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
