Thermal Expansion Workshop

The National Physical Laboratory (Teddington, Middx, England) is holding a one-day Thermal Expansion Workshop on 19 November 2003 at the Angel Hotel, Cardiff, Wales.

The workshop is aimed at the materials scientist and design engineer or technician looking to improve the quality of their data and develop a better understanding of measurement procedures.

The workshop will give a comprehensive review of the current methods for measuring thermal expansion of a range of engineering materials.

Workshop leaders will address practical issues relevant for accurate and reliable measurements, with presentations on dilatometry and novel techniques such as strain gauge methods and optical full field measurements. These techniques have an advantage over conventional dilatometry through the capability of providing multiaxial measurements on large test pieces or components, using simple equipment readily available in most engineering test laboratories.

Case studies and examples showing the characterisation of annealing effects, identification of phase changes, irreversible effects and hysteresis will also be presented.
