Tile Association Reinforces Message that Tiles are Cost Effective

With the introduction in the UK of PFI and PPP contracts, The Tile Association is encouraging designers and contractors to take the design life of all products into account. It emphasises that hard flooring such as ceramic tiles will last a lifetime if selected and installed correctly and, taken over its design life, can prove more cost effective than alternative floor coverings.

In 1997, the Centro Ceramico di Bologna conducted a survey, which was later published in CER International magazine. They took into account the full construction costs for a 20 square metre room including materials, labour, maintenance and replacement costs over 40 years and found the following:

The total cost of one square metre of single fired ceramic floor tile for its entire useful lifetime is US$47.53; polished granite is US$180; teak is US$259; and high quality carpet is US$988.
