Construction Products Association President Welcomes Study of UK Building Materials Industry

Roy Harrison, President of the Construction Products Association, welcomed the study of the UK Building Materials Industry, which was launched at a seminar addressed by Construction Minister, Nick Raynsford. Commenting on the study, Harrison said: "the Construction Products Association has worked closely with DETR in overseeing the work of the consultants on this study and we welcome the publication of the report.

"The report emphasises the importance of the construction products industry to the UK economy in general, and the future development of the construction industry in particular. It highlights many of the challenges and opportunities that the industry is currently facing, including globalisation, consolidation and e-commerce. It also identifies areas where industry and government should work more closely together to improve competitiveness and profitability through, for example, innovation and sustainable development.

"The report is the beginning not the end of a process. The construction products industry will be working much more closely with its sponsoring department to make our industry the best in the world. It will not happen overnight but we are happy to respond positively to Nick Raynsford's challenge at the seminar to report back to him in a year's time on progress we have made on following up the various recommendations of the report. The momentum generated by this study will be maintained and we will endeavour to involve the whole construction products sector in open dialogue on the industry's future competitiveness and prosperity."
