Emissions Trading Scheme - CICS first verifier to be recommended for UKAS approval

On the 3rd October CICS became the first certification body to be recommended for approval by UKAS, as a verifier for agreement participants. This is a major achievement for CICS and one which can benefit the whole industry.

CICS has developed a unique approach to verification, designed specifically for agreement participants to either verify individually or as a group, for those that have overachieved their target and wish to either sell or bank their allowances must have their emissions data.

Companies falling under sector agreements have common reporting and internal validation. The vast majority of agreements are restricted to energy related carbon dioxide and are relatively simple to verify. In these circumstances it is possible to make use of this data to simplify the verification process and even form groups of sites or companies who can share costs.

CICS and its' parent company CERAM Research have been involved in validating energy data for over 20 years. Based upon this experience CICS has developed a unique methodology that utilises experts that have either been directly involved with the development of the DEFRA documentation or are practicing energy experts with a broad knowledge of industry sectors. This implicit competence means CICS can complete the verification process in less time and at a lower cost. All CICS verification activities are fully UKAS accredited and robust.

Due to the nature of the milestone periods, industry capacity in terms of verifiers is very limited. CICS currently has more verifier capacity than any other certification body and is the leading verifier for agreement participants. CICS is currently working with over 11 Trade Associations and numerous individual companies on verification developing plans tailored to the industry sectors.
