Cement Demand in China to Exceed 1 Billion Tons in 2008

Demand for cement in China will advance by 5.4% annually and exceed 1 billion metric tons (mt) in 2008, driven by slowing but healthy growth in construction expenditures. Cement used in China will amount to 44% of global demand and the country will remain the world's largest national consumer of cement by a large margin. These and other trends are presented in 'Cement in China', a new study from The Freedonia Group Inc (Cleveland, OH, USA).

Ready-mix concrete manufacturers will be the strongest market for cement, climbing at an annual pace of 12.8% to reach 194 million mt in 2008. Growth will be driven by the government's 2004 ban on on-site concrete production, enacted to help reduce environmental damage from on-site cement operations and to improve the overall quality of concrete used in construction.

Demand for cement used for non-building construction increased by nearly 10% annually between 1993 and 2003, benefiting from growth in government-funded infrastructure projects such as the Three Gorges. Cement demand in this area is projected to rise by 7.3% annually through to 2008, as more infrastructure related projects continue to stimulate cement consumption.

Non-residential building will remain the largest end use for cement in China. Demand in this segment is forecast to reach 465 million mt in 2008, representing over 40% of the national total.
