Big Money Prizes Awarded to Three European Ceramists
In September, three international ceramic exhibitions opened on the island of Bornholm in Denmark. The exhibitions are part of the event 'European Ceramic Context 2006'. At the official opening, a winner of each exhibition was awarded a prize of 10,000 euros. The event took place in front of an audience of approximately 400 at the Art Museum of Bornholm. Of the 140 exhibitors from 28 countries in Europe, 115 were present at the opening, as were two of the winners.
The winners are:
- Theodora Chorafas (born 1959) from Greece, who exhibits in the category "Established Ceramists" at the Art Museum of Bornholm.
- Mattia Vernocchi (born 1980) from Italy, who exhibits in the category "Young Ceramists" at Grønbechs Gård.
- Piet Stockmans (born 1940) from Belgium, who exhibits in the category "Industrial Ceramic Designers" at Hjorth's Factory Bornholm, Museum of Ceramics.
The three winners were chosen by an international jury consisting of Martina Margetts (United Kingdom), Peteris Martinsons (Latvia), Nino Caruso (Italy), Janet Mansfield (Australia) and Lars Kærulf Møller (Denmark).
In addition, two of the main sponsors – Bornholmstrafikken A/S and Beck Pack Systems A/S – chose to give honourable mention to the following two ceramists: Barbara Nanning (The Netherlands) and Arnold Annen (Switzerland). Both ceramists are exhibiting in the category "Established Ceramists".
