ATOFINA has developed and patented a simple colorimetric method using amaranth to determine levels of chlorine dioxide in drinking water

The following features mark out this new process from other existing methods:

  • High selectivity: measurements are not affected by other chemical species such as ClO-, ClO2-, ClO3-
  • - Very low detection limit (6 µg ClO2/l)
  • Great accuracy
  • Great reliability for in-situ measurements.

  • Produced on site from sodium chlorite, chlorine dioxide is an effective disinfectant (bactericide, virulicide, algicide and sporicide) used for several decades in particular for its long-term effect in protecting water from various contamination and bacterial growth in water mains.

ATOFINA has sold a patent licence to two well-known companies (CIFEC and HACH/Dr. LANGE), which will market in Europe both the reagents and the equipment for the industrial application of the amaranth method.

ATOFINA is the sole producer of sodium chlorite in France. Sodium chlorite is used as such for the bleaching of textile fibres, and for the production of chlorine dioxide in water treatment and many other applications where it is used as an oxidant, decoloriser, deodoriser and disinfectant.
