Optical Quality Control of Spray Dried Powders

An innovative measuring instrument has resulted in improved spray dried powder quality control procedures. The instrument, designated the GMS 100, reliably measures and records the particle size distribution of powders exiting the spray dryer.

The result of a joint research project carried out by Sacmi (Imola, BO, Italy) and the Ancona Polytechnic, it uses CAIA (computer aided image analysis) technology.

After withdrawing the powder from the line automatically, laying it out in a manner suitable for control and acquiring a sufficient number of images via a high-resolution digital camera, the GMS unit applies a sophisticated algorithm to give accurate particle size distribution analysis of the sample in question.
