Italian Tile Producers Continue the Move to Automatic Inspection

Graniti Fiandre, a major Italian manufacturer of both polished and unpolished porcelanatto tiles, has started to replace human inspection with fully automatic tile inspection systems from Surface Inspection Ltd (Bristol, England). The first 11 Flawmaster 3000 systems will be operational by April 2001 and another 10 systems will follow. The Flawmaster will be used to inspect structured, decorated and polished tiles.

Also in Italy, La Guglia SpA - a producer of glazed red body tiles - has completed the first stage of automating tile inspection on its floor tile lines with the installation of four Flawmaster systems. La Guglia produces multi-decorated and rustic structured tiles and in the next few months will also be installing Flawmasters in its wall tile lines.

Finally, the double-fired wall tile producer Sant'Agostino SpA is now successfully using Surface Inspection's Biscuitmaster(tm) for inspecting tiles before glazing. This operation is said to have considerably increased the percentage of first quality product by avoiding adding value to defective tiles later in the production process.
