GE Speciality Materials Acquires Advanced Ceramic Business

GE Speciality Materials (Wilton, CT, USA) - a unit of General Electric Company - has completed the acquisition of the assets of Advanced Ceramics Corporation and Advanced Ceramics International Corporation. Advanced Ceramics is the world's largest boron nitride producer.

The Advanced Ceramics business manufactures boron nitride crucibles that are used to grow wafers used in wireless phones and LEDs. It makes heaters that increase efficiencies in semiconductor chip making equipment. Additionally, its boron nitride powders add softness and smoothness to cosmetics.

The thermal management properties of Advanced Ceramics' boron nitride powder are also useful in applications that cool the space shuttle's landing gear and prevent PCBs from overheating. The company also makes high temperature ceramics that evaporate metal in the production of glossy plastics used in gift-wrap, bottle labels and crisp bags.

The Advanced Ceramics business is based in Cleveland, Ohio, USA and will become part of the GE Quartz business within GE Specialty Materials. The acquisition is the first for GE Quartz. The new business will be known as GE Advanced Ceramics. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Advanced Ceramics has manufacturing plants in Strongsville, Ohio USA, Cardiff, Wales and Kozuki, Japan. ACC and ACIC employ 270 people globally.
