Degussa-Hüls secures Collaboration agreement with MediChem Access to cutting edge technology for fine chemicals

Degussa-Hüls and MediChem Life Sciences Inc. (Chicago, IL). have signed a three year research and manufacturing agreement. The agreement was announced on Tuesday by Degussa-Hüls at the CPhI in Milan.

MediChem is a leading drug discovery and service company for the life science industry: Its services have a focus on process scouting and development for active ingredients and pharmaceutical intermediates. In addition, its ThermoGen, INC. affiliate has cutting edge technology in enzyme engineering.

Degussa-Hüls Fine Chemicals is a leading supplier of active ingredients and intermediates for the life science industry based on chemical and bio-catalyzed routes. One of its strengths resides in its cGMP-certified manufacturing facilities in Hanau and Dresden (Germany) and Ham (France) and more than 60 DMFs for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The strategic alliance provides Degussa-Hüls' access not only to key technologies for the synthesis of biocatalysts, which Degussa-Hüls routinely applies to produce enantiomerically pure active ingredients, but also to projects which exceed the manufacturing ability of MediChem. In this respect, the alliance allows the realization of a seamless supply service reaching from the development phase into the commercial manufacturing phase of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Degussa-Hüls is one of the world's leading specialty chemicals companies. In the first half of 2000 it reported sales of EUR 6.1 billion (excluding precious metals trading).
