Ceriac 'CHARGES' Forward

Following a review, the Ceramics Industry Advisory Committee (CERIAC) has decided to reform itself as a non-Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) body. The review looked at the relationship between the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), the Health & Safety Commission (HSC) and the administration of the Industry Advisory Committees. The new non-IAC body was formed in order to provide its stakeholders with the best possible service.

Members see the new committee as an opportunity to continue the good work of CERIAC, but to operate new ways of working, with less formal procedures. The opportunity was also taken to review and expand membership to include the glass industry, which had previously been contributing to CERIAC under observer status.

The new committee is called the Ceramics, Heavy Clay, Refractories and Glass Manufacturing Industries Joint Health and Safety Advisory Committee (CHARGE) and was formally launched earlier in the year.

While CHARGE is a non-IAC body, it is still tripartite, with representatives from HSE, industry and trade unions as members. It represents the same industries as CERIAC but has been expanded to include the glass manufacturing industry. The responsibilities of Chair and Secretary remain with HSE.
