Ceradyne Receives $7 Million Order for Ceramic Armour Systems

Ceradyne Inc (Costa Mesa, CA, USA) has announced that a US Government Agency has ordered approximately US$7 million worth of the company's ceramic body armour ballistic plates to protect certain elite US military personnel.

The order is the largest delivery order to date and is another in the series of continuing orders stemming from an indefinite contract originally announced in March 1998. The contract was to run through 2003, but recently the Agency notified Ceradyne of its intent to extend the contract for at least two more years into 2005.

Joel Moskowitz, Ceradyne's CEO, said: "We are pleased to continue supplying ceramic body armor systems to protect these elite forces, especially under current heightened defense needs. During the course of this contract, we've incorporated improvements in design and materials. As a result, these ceramic systems represent the state-of-the-art for body armor required to defeat significant battlefield threats.

"Orders under this long-term armor contract have been a source of continuing revenues, while orders announced during the last several months have been for our other major line of body armor, known as small arms protective inserts, or SAPI, to protect U.S. Army forces."
