Plaudits for British Ceramic Tile at CIPS Supply Management Awards

Devon-based tile manufacturer British Ceramic Tile won the ‘Best purchasing initiative by a smaller organisation’ Award at the prestigious Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) Supply Management Awards 2008. This annual event recognises excellence nationwide in the important business function of purchasing and supply.

Adjudicated by a panel of 11 judges from across the industry, the awards are the pivotal event for the year helping to celebrate excellence in Purchasing and Supply management. The panel commented: “This is a real example of how a purchasing and supply chain function can have a positive effect on a smaller organisation. It’s good to see that while savings matter in these early stages of development, British Ceramic Tile has also focussed on getting some benefits over the line, including risk management and relationship management”.

British Ceramic Tile’s Head of Supply Chain and Procurement, Andrew Neilson, commented: “This is a fantastic achievement for British Ceramic Tile. It has put procurement and supply chain at the heart of its business recognising at board level that procurement plays an integral part in the company’s growth, and I am thrilled that our team has been recognised in this way”.

The supply chain and procurement function has become the central management hub that is necessary to deliver the level of commercial control, consistency and best practice, and help drive consistent product availability for the company. This is particularly important as British Ceramic Tile’s extensive site and facility development is currently underway due to an increasing demand for its product lines. Representing a £15 million investment, this initiative will see the factory capacity more than double by the end of 2008 making it the largest ceramic tile manufacturing project of its kind in Europe.
