Defense Department Award and Smart Tennis Rackets

Advanced Cerametrics, Inc (ACI) was recently notified that it was one of seven finalists in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) competition for its Outstanding Performance by a Small Business Contractor Award. ACI was chosen from thousands of Defense Department small business contractors.

The research that ACI conducted for the Defense Department focussed on development of a technology to make piezoelectric ceramic fiber and devices from that fiber. The research was completed in March, 2000 and is now the subject of a follow-on research program to make piezoelectric devices for noise suppression in Navy systems.

Before the research was completed, ACI reached agreement with Head Sports to use the technology to make smart tennis rackets. These were introduced at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in August and will be commercially available after January 1, 2001. The rackets are the basis for Head's new line of "Intelligence" rackets and can be seen on Head Sport's website at: www.head.com. This introduction resulted in a multi-year, several million dollar supply agreement for ACI's piezoelectric fibers.
