Albemarle to Raise Core Product Prices

Albemarle Corp., which has battled soaring costs for commodity prices in recent months, said it will raise prices on some of its core chemical products by 15 percent to 25 percent at the beginning of 2009.

Affected products will be aluminum trihydroxides used by manufacturers of foams, plastics and electronic parts as a flame retardant and by manufacturers in the paper and board industries as coating agents.

The price increases also will apply to Albemarle’s aluminum oxides, used by manufacturers in ceramics, catalysts, absorbents and other applications.

Albemarle said higher raw material, freight and energy costs led to the decision.

Some of the price increases won’t apply until current contracts expire after the start of the new year, the company said.
